June BLOOM!

June Gloom? NO! JUNE BLOOM! Recently I bought a sketchbook from an artist I really like and I got inspired to unleash myself from this art block I've had for a month or so. It doesn't look like it maybe but I've been feeling stagnant for months with my drawing. I've been drawing Social Hangover for 6 months now and been working on Press start since January. I needed a shake up that going outside and being social just wasn't hitting. Seeing Solomon Fletcher work is what did it. Click their name to get the sketchbook yourselves. It is FREE but I highly suggest paying for it. They are THAT good. They make the comic Goldy and the Bears  too. NSFW just so you know.

I'm going to try to keep my sketches private and make a yearly sketchbook this year. Monthly if I can really buckle down for it. It's been a long time since I've felt this spark. It was back in one drawing class I had that I would fill pages and pages with neon color markers and pencils. Well I am back!

I made this last week because someone was making me mad with their pessimistic elitist attitude towards the comic community.  I know if you need to bitch about an issue then go for it! If you're just being negative though just leave. You're basically a wall shouting at itself. I ain't got time for that. I made this hand gesture by accident while ranting to myself. I made the galaxy pattern for some dress I was drawing the other month. Making galaxy print is really fun. I'm going to make these into stickers for future cons. I applied to a few and hope I get a reply soon.

These are some pages I did recently in my poor abandon sketchbook. The Pokemon on is a mini comic

I'm making and the second pages is just Lars and Sadie from Steven Universe. I'm a big shipper I can't help it. I may be making another mini for Sadie and Lars about their first official date. I like the idea of making mini comics like other people I admire. It's making me get smarter about layout and the way a character can fill a panel.

Ever since the episodes where the Gems from space came I've had a FLCL feeling. I'm trying to make a big crossover art by my birthday with all the characters. I really like Periodot for some reason. the whole don't touch my stuff.stop breaking my things really resonates with me.

I watched Nightcrawler this week and it was INTENSE. I never feel anxious when I watch movies, even thrillers. So many are just not that exciting. This was really well done though! It really built up each character just enough to get you to like them them flipped it around into hate and fear. At least for me it did and probably others. I made a speed paint for this one and I have been slowly making more youtube content.

I also made a speed paint for some Ashes and Coffee Stains characters. I'll be uploading those to my Patreon in a week or so as I finish them all.

Heres to a summer of drawing! get ready for lots of long blogs!

TCAF 2015

LIFE GOAL ACHIEVED! We got to go to TCAF this weekend and it was amaaaaaaazzziiiinggg. This is our stash.

Besides my skateboard I put my stickers on my art box. I like stickers like Benny like Spaceships.
Benny

 The Goods:

Getting to all the people I wanted was not easy. I missed getting Nimona because I got there right as they told me Noelle was going to a panel. The one guy gave me some attitude when I asked if I should come back tomorrow nicely. Thats not why I didn't go get the book. I went back the next morning but...... it was sold out. I bought a sticker though and she was super nice enough to sign my Lumber Janes.

It was hard to get everything I set out to before I went. It was just so crowded and my anxiety was killing me. I really REALLY wanted to mini from Gisele who makes Start Trip. I did get the cool print, some stickers and a perfect origami butterfly. It felt extra special because of the gold pen. ^O^ But even more so because PB teased me as we left the table saying it's so cute to see me fan girl.

The Panels:

Some were the best most fantastic help! Some....were miss.  Overall between PB & I we went to 5-6 of them. The distribution panel was super great! Geoffrey Golden was on it & it was so weird because I had a making comics a class with him 2 years ago in LA!. I went to their Devastator booth later in the day but met is super cool partner Amanda Meadows. THEN when I went to the Anthology panel next day seen her again, lol. They are cool people and I learned a LOT.

Friends:

I felt awkward off and on. Day 1 I went with a new friend, that was nice. Missed one friend because she was volunteering. Seen one on the way out who handed me the last TCJ book because I missed the last one. In a few panels there were some who randomly talked to me. There were a few who stared at me like I was a moose with fairy wings. I am always analyzing my surroundings especially when in big volume events like this. I was definitely a bit...odd? Though maybe just because of 1 aspect, I'm used to feeling weird with the general public but it's be nice if "my people" the indie nerds would be nicer and I don't know..NOT STARE! I know it's hard to believe a unicorn like me exists with my beautiful brown skin & rainbow hair.

Overall I can't wait til next year. I plan to volunteer myself so I can make more friends and see more stuff.

For-Profit & Fraud

I was going to wait until after TCAF to make a post but...

Corinthian and Art Institute (also run by Corinthian) are closing FOREVER.

Above all I promise to be level headed and as accurate in this post as I can. The people who are too outwardly livid about this may sound like they're ranting with no cause but all of our stories matter.

Points/Articles:

TLDR because a lot of this post will be my personal experience and other friends who went to Art Institute: The aftermath of going to school at AI was not worth it. Massive debt,non-transferable credits and fraudulent job placements. DO NOT go to any school associated with Corinthian or any for profit for that matter. Unless you're wealthy, even then, run. It'd be better to self teach & find alternative resources.

The Enrollment and Loans

When I decided to finally go to 4 year college  it was because I'd come around to the idea that a degree would help and that school would focus my direction. Before that I was in Santa Monica College for photography and working part time at restaurants. The pressure to leave home from certain family was also a selling point. They were wrong of course, this was a new generation and economic climate, even before 2006.I was literally the 2ed person in my family to go to college. We had no money to do what I thought was frivolous at the time, like go to college. I was in,what my husband calls, survival mode. It feels like most low income people do the same when presented with a better life through college.

I applied to Art Institute when I got a flier in the mail. It was the only school that had anything I wanted to do;all art. When I got there I had my portfolio ready. They told me it was 3 days before the new quarter started but I could apply right away. As the meeting went on the recruiter refused to see my portfolio saying that he was sure I was good enough. Red Flag 1. Then he said if I filled out paper work that day I could start the next quarter. He meant the one in 3 days time! Reed Flag 2. I asked what I needed to pay to get started and the recruiter said nothing up front but I would be sent to the financial office. Red Flag 3. I was used to other schools like SMC that offered a BOG fee waiver and Grants before loans.

I decided to take 1 loan to start school hoping that I could just pay it with the job that I had. As the first few quarters went by that wasn't viable anymore. I found a job closer to school to keep paying for transportation and food. I had to quit my jobs after a while. The work load & travel time of 2 hrs each way on transit was too much. It was never enough to pay for an actual class but I qualified for a small grant because I was ward of the court(in foster care as a child & rights given up from my mother to my grandmother). It seemed like I could afford it even as my debt piled up with every loan I took out. With the school saying its job placement was so high I thought it worth it to keep going.

Why couldn't I ask my family for money or co-signing right? On top of none of my guardians having any money for it anyway, going to college at all was not the most supported idea. My gran refused to be even a little encouraging about education unless I was going to be a doctor or lawyer. When I was in the middle of my last year is when she came around because it seemed like I was doing something worth money.

The Classes

The classes could have been more in depth but what can you really get done in 11 weeks? Especially learning as a beginner. Most of the teachers I had were great. Some were just awful and 2 got fired they were that bad. Bullying students and making personal insults will gain you a bit of flack. As well as 1 who was caught stealing student work! If you went to school with me you know who each of these teachers are.

The main reason I didn't realize I was in trouble was because I got mostly good grades. I only flunked 1 class in all 4 years. That was around the time I had 2 jobs. I'm still friends with my favorite teachers. I was in the Animation department but worked double by also working with friends in both schools production teams. I worked my ass off even though it may not have looked it because I was so quiet.

I was exhausted every day of my final year. My friends and I did so many overnights to render our 3D work that the security guards knew us by name. They stopped bothering us as we crashed on the lounge sofas because we'd been there literally every day of the week to do work. When people say we worked hard at that school we don't just mean late nights at home. People were basically living there with bags of snacks, sleeping wherever and making the labs our render farms. At least a group of us did. To say we didn't get jobs after because we didn't work hard enough is a fucking joke. That is the greatest insult you could say to us who had given up sanity for quality and production.

Exiting

Thats life right, hard work to the point of insanity? I left Art Institute because I wouldn't afford my last quarter of 2 classes. There was what seemed to be a loophole in the loans process. I had to take out more than $2,000 to get it to work. At the rate I was going having a hard time in demo 2 I knew that I'd have 1 class my final quarter and thus be just below the loan minimum. The school pressured me to get a co-signer even as I told them I had no one to help.Red Flag 4. I ended up convincing my gran to co-sign but they turned me down anyway because of her own past school debt, though minimal.

I tried to redo my final for demo 2 in hopes that I'd pass and not have to take out the extra loan. I failed and was berated by that one teacher who was fried. "Do you even want to be here" they said. If you couldn't tell by seeing me (and many others) there all day every day then they were an idiot. When it came down to it I was sick of hemorrhaging debt so I left with 2 classes short. I was told by the director of the animation department that I should stay and that it would be too hard to make it if I left. I'm sure the staff had to do what that would to keep students so they school could keep drowning them in debt.Red Flag 5 I took my chances for the better.

I applied to Otis,a school I'd been looking at for some time, and got in! I didn't know that Art Institute was not accredited thus none of my credits would transfer. On top of that when I went to the admissions office to fill out paper work I was asked what school I went to before. I said AI and literally got laughed at out loud. The admissions person apologized for me having gone to that school and not that she laughed. When people say these schools are jokes it's true. I didn't go through with Otis,I also couldn't afford it. They were not letting me take out private loans.

Jobs

I applaud fellow students that were able to get studio jobs right out of school or eventually. Most of the rest of us though didn't get that lucky. With a diploma or not, finding a job using AI's job offices was a waste. Lists of dead links for job boards, withholding job info if you didn't graduate yet and employees in said job center that were flippant were the biggest road blocks there.

I didn't expect the school or the diploma to get me a job in any way but some people did. They're not wrong when the idea of a diploma was that it would give us a leg up in being qualified for jobs we'd trained so hard for. For some it might be true but the truth is layered.

It is who you know, your skill, your determination and sometimes dumb luck that gets jobs. Friends pass you jobs, former employers pass you jobs, community is where the opportunities are. No amount of shallow activity in them will work. Don't be afraid to ask for support from them because if you really want to be in this field you do have to work hard. Return the favor and make that art of your community strong.

Forgive our loans

It's easy to dismiss the hoards of students in debt as the whining "millennials" but it's not our fault the economy went to shit now is it. (Looking at you government bailouts). The time of getting a degree to get a job is quickly dissipating with "skillmills" like these crushing any hope we had of having that so called "American Dream". It's not easy for the first and second generation students to have known not to go to for-profit colleges when no one else in our families had much,if any college experience.

How would our loans be forgiven and where would the money come from to pay the government back? Why not hold these for-profit schools accountable for it. More than just making them close down or file bankruptcy. Not only did they hurt legions of students but they defrauded the government itself. And thats what the government probably cares about more than helping ailing students in debt. So forgive our loans and go after the organizations that actually hurt you,the for-profit schools.

Breathing!

HELLO! It's been so long since I last blogged at all. It's been a very crazy end of the year and beginning of a new one.  I quit Goodwill because I moved to Toronto with my now husband for his job. I can't believe how many times I've said that since November. O_O

We've been getting settled and quite fast if I do say so. I've done more here in 5-ish months that I did in a lifetime in LA. It could be my age, it could be that LA was strangling me...who knows.

I had a job at a theater for a little while, that was fun. I got to be an opening person ALL BY MY SELF. Oh the responsibility. I got a second job at some call center place that turned out to be bullshit.(I quit) I got a volunteer job at The Kitchen Library where I am well..a librarian of kitchen equipment. I feel very smart, lol. I am also doing some layout work for them too.

From there I got a job as a teacher at Skill Tree Toronto. I'll be starting Saturday! I know that it may be a small turn out but I hope it's a turn out at all. It's just the first session. It's also my first class solo. I've always gravitated towards being a teacher while in classes. I'm always the one to help someone,I like asking questions too and encouraging people to keep going. I also always ask if the person wants help/critique. It can be upsetting coming out of nowhere. Especially to the high school people I did a few lectures with. A wise teacher of mine once said that the hard workers will surpass the naturally talented if they get too cocky.  I made this flier for the event. Please share if you live in Toronto or know someone there.  ^_^  It's a big help. Just click the flier for the link.                                                                                 I've also got a secret freelance job working with my friend Deb on her book series. Go look at her page! DL Warner

Next I've been working on Social Hangover since October. That is 6 moths, yay me! I've taken a small therapy exercise and turned it into a weekly comic, thanks to my college therapist. If he ever sees this I hope he's proud. Though I know we have that confidentiality thing so I wont say his name. New pages every Monday by the way. click the pic of me freaking out

New project I'm working on at the moment is Press Start. It's been a challenge more than I thought. It's on me because I have this idea for it thats a different kind of page layout than I'm used to. It's kind of full page spread and journal comic feel with limited panel boxes. It'll also be in color for the PDF of it but black and white for the mini run I do to distribute in local stores. Gotta test the print waters.
I am very into Steven Universe and started making gemsonnas. From that I got this idea to make this series of 3 metaphysical representations of my mental health state. Only 2 so far but I'm doing it in between comics.

Lastly I've made a Patreon! I didn't make it to follow everyone else like some videos I seen for the Patreons. (If you don't want one don't make one and complain on the video,WTF)  I make work all the time,so much so that I have folders and folders of ideas for future works. Literally folders of reference images, concept sketches, character designs, turn arounds, color tests, animation tests and soooooooo much more. I am READY to start on any one of them at any moment. More pile up every day. I'm going to make them anyway but having the love and support will make it much less stressful.

We all know I suck at retail jobs. From wearing wigs to get them, having to be in uniform and trying not to punch a rude customer it's the kind of thing that will end in death. Mine or a customers, who knows. I try to get freelance when I can. I apply to studios and do con visits when I can but the latter gets expensive. (prints, registration, food for the day travel, ect.) If you can help me out and have like $1 a month I'll be posting art like crazy. I promise to fill your book shelves or just your hard drives with joy and adventures. And porn for those who want to see Sexposition one day.(My smutty sketchbook of all the series I have and some fanart heeheehee)

I'll be making a new video for it soon. The first one is good but I want it to be the best at getting my point across.

Comics Time!

This was completed October 2013 and I am so happy to finally be posting all the pages. I took it to BentCon 2013 with only 20 prints and sold a few. After a year of minimal edits here it is. Of course a part of me wishes I posted it earlier because when I look at it I can see how much I've grown learning to make pages. Maybe one day (maybe when I'm 60) I'll redraw it and add the other 30 pages I wanted to.Over all tho I'm happy with how the story turned out. Read it on this page every weekday until all pages are up. The comic is 30-ish pages so it has an end. ^_^

Next project I'm working on is Social Hangover. So far I'm coloring pages and making more. Hopefully I can make it a weekly thing. It's basically my journey with social anxiety and depression. At one point this month I thought what if I run out of ideas but then I remembered I have a lifetime of this. This comic means a lot to me since I am a big advocate of therapy and self evaluation. It's a combination of working as a retail and food service person, making friends and so fourth.

Finally the comic I've been working on all year that will have the first issue posted in 2015 is Scarlet Shadow!

I've never made a super hero before really but I have a great writer who is all about the super hero's. At the core it's a story of 2 sisters who reunite. One lawyer, one engineer graduate student and one shady custody case. Mix it all together and you get Scarlet Shadow.

Sketch Design Final and Graffiti

Finally got my final and Graffiti projects back from Sketch for Design summer session 1. I only posted the ones I like for the Graffiti and all 8 pages of my final. The final was done in 2 days with less sleep than I used to get doing over night renders as an animation student. This class was tough and I loved it. The graffiti started as our names but I went and used my business name because I like it better. Also, cats and cake is awesome.

A lot of the graffiti was inspired by Jet Set Radio Future and I plan to make a big painting of my hubs and I as JSRF styled skaters with a city filled with this graffiti as my love for those games.
This was our final project to draw a day in our lives. I drew all the things I do all week from taveling on the metro to working at Goodwill and even what's in my purse and the bags I carry a lot.

Summer 2014 Part 2

Part 2 of Summer at PCC was just as challenging and thats what I wanted and expected to have from what I heard about the art dept. Next up was 2D and Color design with Prof. Mahara Sinclair. I thought it was going to be more color heavy but it was both that and abstract design. Abstract I think is not my strongest but people disagreed. It did get more fun as the class progress, especially when we got to do organic design and color! Ah color!

This was project 1 with black paper cutouts. Pick a word of movement and design that abstractly. Mine was raking spaghetti squash and DNA. Through the first few projects I found that my default shape is the wispy curl.

This is project 3 I think? This is not how my project 3 final turned out tho because it is a bit complex for that short amount of time and my scheduled of day job. I wish I had made this one but now that I have the sketch laid out I may do it soon and also in color.

This is the sketch for project 4. Design with a word in mind again and use a 3 color scheme. I used primary triad,I'm a sucker for pink and blue. I designed this inspired by hair braids and knots. I twisted them all together to make a hair piece that was the most epic I could muster. Another rule about this project was to go in and out of values so that no value was next to the same value and we had to do it graduated. It's difficult at first but once I got the hang out it I loved it! The numbers are there to help me remember the value number.

Yes there is a right way up to hang this because of how I wanted the strands to flow upward. Acrylic on illustration board 15in by 15in square.

How I work usually since sketching for design and just life in general was that I need to sketch thumbnails of EVERYTHING I want to make bigger. As soon as Prof. Sinclair said we could do anything we wanted to the final with the fantasy landscape jumping off point I went a bit over board but I think it worked. Worked on this for 3 weeks before the final and then painted the final over the course of 3 days about 6-7 hour rounds with some clean ups in class thats 6 hr lab.

This is what I ended up with. I wanted the colors to compliment and contrast each side and I didn't want to do a standard orange and blue design. I went peach to blue to violet to blue gray. I added the tree for fun to have a personal laugh at how long it took me to learn to draw a conifer tree. It was always going to have characters on the foreground but I went and added what I liked about the project 1 and made it not only break the frame but break the frame forward.

Each character was painted then cut out to the edges where I added cotton balls to the backs to make it pop off the page itself.

It turned out just how I wanted it. Characters going one direction and the enviro in the other creating a zig zag. I loved this class and all it's challenges with deign weight, shapes and color especially. I will be making more pop up art like this with even more depth as soon as I can. I have 3D design in the Fall.
